Can I use my Nokia E61 phone as a SIP Phone on your PABX?

These Nokia phones certainly look interesting for their ability to work as a SIP based PABX extension when used in the office and a conventional mobile phone when out on the road.

They are fairly new and we have not had the opportunity to do sufficient real world testing to add them to our formal list of supported phones. We have found the following works well on our office VoIPCortex PABX and a Nokia E61 though.

First of all upgrade your phone to the latest available firmware. We have also received reports that the SIP functionality is crippled or otherwise not functional in some provider specific firmware on contract phones. We've done all our testing on vanilla Nokia phones bought SIM free and upgraded to the latest firmware version so your mileage may vary.

  1. On the PABX web UI, manually add a generic phone to the PABX from the System -> Phone Hardware menu. Use a made up, unique MAC Address and set the phone type to Unknown/Other. Unless you use static network settings (definitely not recommended) don't enter any network settings, but do set Monitor/Keepalive Override to Enabled.
  2. Having created the phone, click on Show Phone info (magnifying glass symbol) next to the phone and note the Line 1 SIP Login/Pass username and password which you will need when setting up the mobile.
  3. Create a Wi-Fi Access Point configuration on the phone if you don't already have one (Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Access Points (Option Key) -> New Access Point). Test the Access Point using another application like the web browser to ensure DNS addresses are being resolved and internal network connectivity exists.
  4. Create a new SIP account on the phone by going to Tools -> Settings -> Connections -> SIP Settings (Option Key) -> Add New and entering the following settings:
Profile Name: Enter any meaningful profile name
    Service Profile: IETF
Default Access Point: as defined above
Public user name: SIP username@PABX domain name
    Use Compression: No
    Registration: Always On
    Use Security: no

    Proxy Server
Proxy server address: sip:PABX domain name
    Realm: (empty)
    User name: SIP username
    Password: SIP password
    Allow loose routing: Yes
    Transport Type: UDP
    Port: 5060

    Registrar Server
    Registrar server: sip:PABX domain name
    Realm: asterisk
    User Name: SIP username
    Password: SIP password
    Transport Type: UDP
    Port: 5060

  5. Add a default Internet telephone profile to point at the new SIP account (Tools -> Settings -> Connections -> Internet tel (Option Key) -> New Profile).
  6. (optional) - Change the default call type to Internet in Tools -> Settings -> Call this will cause the left hand call button to use SIP by default when you are in range and registered with the PABX, otherwise it will use GSM. Note that if you simply enter a number and press in the joystick you will always be presented with a context menu that offers a list of GSM/Video/Internet calls in a fixed order.
  7. Now switch the phone off and on again after completion of all configuration steps above.

Test by typing a number on the keypad, pressing the joystick in, and selecting Internet Call. The call should be placed via the PABX not mobile network.

The phone can then be associated with a user via the PABX web UI in the normal way and incoming calls tested.

fax

We are using a soft-fax, and some people can never get a fax to us.

We are using a FAX machine on an ATA, and it is unreliable. What can we do?

I've heard about using T.38 for faxes on digital systems. What is it, and can it help?

Is there an email-to-fax facility on the PABX?

inbound calls

Inbound calls do not work.

outbound calls

I cannot dial 100 to get the operator

I want to use a VoIP channel by default. How?

How can I calculate correct charges for calls made over the IPCortex VoIP service?

The calling number (CLI) is being sent correctly for most of my calls, but sometimes the called party sees the call coming from lowest DDI in my range instead. What can I do to fix this?

email

Email notifications of voicemail or faxes is not working

voicemail

I dial 8500 to pickup voicemail but nothing happens
